Wii Fit Board

The Nintendo Wii Fit Balance Board

In early December 2007 Nintendo celebrated the release of of their most innovative product yet; the Wii Fit Board. The product is a wireless white plastic board with pressure sensors which is used as a peripheral alongside the Wii console for use with the game 'Wii Fit'.

To use the Wii Fit Board the user places their body on the balance board in accordance with what the game asks them to do, e.g. balance on their right leg. From this, the board calculates how the pressure is divided and sends that data to the console and the score is displayed on screen.

Before the Nintendo Wii Fit Board was introduced onto the market there were no mainstream games consoles that encouraged players to keep fit. In this way, Nintendo was the first company to attempt tackling the 21st century problem correlation between playing games consoles for long periods of time and poor health. Nintendo undertook this task by separating fitness into four areas also known as 'training modes'; Yoga, Aerobics, Strength Training and Balance Games. Together all four modes encompass 40 different fitness activities to be carried out with the Wii Fit Board.

It's not just exercise and training for those using the Nintendo Wii Fit Board however. As each player progresses through their training they unlock different activities and can access more areas of the game using 'Fit Credits' which include leaning with the feet in Skiing slaloms and rotating their hips to spin a hula hoop, all done on the Wii Fit Board. By introducing this concept players have a drive to carry on the game and even more so when they discover the 'Wii Fit Age' feature which takes into account the player's weight, actual age and athleticism to calculate how old their body is.

The WiiFit Board and the Nintendo Wii Fit game itself have almost revolutionized the way that we see exercise and fitness. If every household were to have one then perhaps we would talk about keeping fit a lot more, be more likely to integrate it into our daily lives and most importantly to enjoy sports and fitness together. Everyone from around the age of 5 and up can hop on a Wii Fit Board and start to lower their Wii Fit Age and collect Fit Credits to unlock additional games. It's perhaps the best console peripheral ever designed and in a nutshell, Nintendo have made exercise fun for everyone.
